Embarrassment over providing a semen sample at a clinic often delays couples from seeking fertility help. To address this, Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic now offers an at-home semen collection service, allowing samples to be picked up and analyzed quickly, with results discussed privately with a fertility expert.
Mr. Oliver Wiseman, a consultant at Bourn Hall and one of the UK’s few urologists focused on male fertility, stresses the importance of testing both partners. “Even if a woman knows she has fertility issues, there could still be a male factor,” he said. “Half of infertility cases involve male factors, and semen testing is non-invasive.”
Wiseman adds that sperm quality can improve with lifestyle changes. Some men may also have treatable conditions like dilated veins that affect sperm production. “There are many options to improve natural conception or boost treatment success,” he explained.
Speed is key in semen analysis. Bourn Hall has an on-site lab where samples are examined immediately for sperm count, movement, and quality. Still, the idea of visiting a clinic can deter many men, so the clinic is offering more private alternatives.
Through a partnership with MOJO, Bourn Hall now provides an AI-powered at-home semen test. Men can produce a sample in the comfort of their own home, and it’s then collected for lab analysis. Results are reviewed in a one-on-one consultation with a specialist.
“A poor semen result can be upsetting,” Wiseman noted. “That’s why we discuss results in person—so patients can ask questions and understand their options. A low sperm count isn’t the end, it’s the beginning of finding solutions.”
The at-home service, which also includes options for female testing, was introduced following changes brought on by the Covid pandemic. These changes have remained popular with patients, offering more flexibility without affecting success rates.
