Rebecca Brown, a 44-year-old NHS nurse from Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, has celebrated a significant milestone in her life as her daughter, Ethel, has started school. Rebecca’s journey to motherhood was made possible after she won £250,000 in the National Lottery with her family syndicate in August 2016. The win, part of a £1 million jackpot, transformed her life in more ways than she could have imagined.
However, Rebecca faced a devastating setback two years later when routine medical examinations revealed pre-cancerous cells in her cervix. Doctors advised her that if she wished to have children, she should act quickly due to the possibility of a hysterectomy. Faced with this urgent advice, Rebecca decided to invest £12,000 of her lottery winnings into IVF treatment, ultimately resulting in her pregnancy after two rounds of treatment.
In January 2020, Rebecca welcomed her “priceless” daughter, Ethel, into the world—just weeks before the UK was hit by a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. As a result, Ethel spent her early months at home, with limited opportunities for social interaction. Now, as she embarks on her school journey, Rebecca reflects on the changes this milestone has brought.
“Ethel has started reception, and like any mother, I’ve had to adjust to this new chapter,” Rebecca said, recalling the emotional moments that accompanied her daughter’s first days at school. Since her lottery win, Rebecca has reduced her work hours to just two days a week, allowing her to spend more time with Ethel.
“Without a mortgage, my financial burdens are lighter, which has provided a sense of peace and control,” she shared. “I’m grateful that I can be there for Ethel at the beginning of her day and when she comes home.”
Ethel’s upbringing is supported not only by Rebecca but also by her close-knit family, including her father David, 68, her mother Yvonne, 67, and her sister Julie, 41. David expressed the family’s deep affection for Ethel, stating, “She is the center of our universe, and our lottery win means so much more to us now.”
Rebecca emphasizes that winning the lottery provided her with more than just financial relief; it enabled her to fulfill her dream of becoming a mother. “Some people associate lottery wins with luxury items, but for me, the true gift has been Ethel. Without a doubt, she is the best investment I made with my winnings,” Rebecca explained. “Giving birth was the most incredible day of my life.”
In the early weeks after Ethel’s birth, Rebecca moved in with her parents as the nation entered lockdown. “It was a strange time, and I struggled with the loss of my initial plans to enjoy those early months with Ethel,” she admitted. “However, the lockdown forged an incredible bond within our family.”
Rebecca cherishes the simple pleasures of life with Ethel, from cooking and baking to reading and visiting the park. Her father has even embraced his playful side, learning to navigate soft play tunnels alongside Ethel.
Describing her daughter, Rebecca said, “Ethel is spirited and mischievous but also kind and caring. She is perfect just the way she is.”
The family continues to participate in the National Lottery, using the same numbers each week. David splurged on an Aston Martin with part of his winnings, but he kept it for just six months, ensuring he could always claim to have owned his “dream motor.” They also acquired a holiday home and a four-seater Surrey bike to enjoy quality time together.
