Infertility is becoming a major health problem in India. Around 27.5 million couples find it hard to have children. Despite improvements in reproductive healthcare, many people still cannot access infertility treatments. This is especially true in government hospitals and clinics.
A recent report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) called the 2025 State of World Population (SOWP) shows that 13% of people see infertility as a barrier to having the family they want.
One big issue is the high cost of fertility treatments. Private clinics offer advanced medical procedures, but many couples cannot afford them. Besides money, problems like unstable housing and insecure jobs also stop people from having children.
Social stigma makes things worse, especially for women. Society often blames women for infertility, even though men and women are equally affected. Experts say infertility can be caused by many reasons. These include lifestyle habits, pollution, hormone problems, and other health conditions.
Dr. Sujata Kar, an expert Obstetrician and Gynecologist from Bhubaneswar, says education is key. She explains, “Infertility is not just a medical problem. It is also a social issue. Couples need the right knowledge and support to make choices about having children without fear or shame.”
To fix India’s infertility challenges, people must have the freedom to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. This means making fertility treatments more affordable, offering paid family leave, and reducing the stigma around infertility.
The UNFPA report stresses that helping people reach their reproductive goals is more important than worrying about population growth or decline.
By improving access to care and encouraging open talk about infertility, India can create a future where everyone has the chance to build the family they want.
