Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has gained a reputation for its exceptional medical services, drawing an increasing number of international patients. Known for its specialized expertise in complex surgeries, the hospital has become a sought-after destination for those seeking treatment for kidney stones, urological and gastrointestinal cancers, male reproductive disorders, and other serious health conditions.
Between 2023 and 2025, the hospital performed over 1,000 surgeries for patients from 26 different countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and many parts of Asia. Many overseas Vietnamese also seek treatment at Binh Dan, making it a key hub for medical care in the region.
The hospital’s success can be attributed to its highly skilled medical team and cutting-edge technology. Most procedures are carried out using advanced methods, such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery. Binh Dan Hospital is especially well-known for its expertise in urethral reconstruction, microsurgical infertility treatment, and other specialized men’s health procedures. Word-of-mouth referrals from previous patients, medical professionals, and friends contribute significantly to its growing international patient base.
One case that highlights the hospital’s rising global recognition involves a 47-year-old American man who sought treatment for urethral stricture. This condition had caused him significant discomfort and health issues since an accident 15 years ago. Despite undergoing six surgeries at leading medical centers in the US, Thailand, and Singapore, his condition worsened over time.
In April, the patient turned to Binh Dan Hospital. Dr. Do Lenh Hung, head of the Urethral Reconstructive Surgery Department, led a surgical team that performed a successful urethral reconstruction on May 17. Despite complications from previous surgeries and extensive tissue damage, the procedure lasted two hours and restored normal urinary function. The patient was fully recovered three weeks after surgery, with no leakage or complications.
Dr. Hung emphasized that global success rates for urethral reconstruction are typically low, ranging from 56% to 73%. However, Binh Dan Hospital has reported a success rate of 98% for this procedure, a figure that was shared by Professor Joel Gelman from the University of California, Irvine, at international medical conferences.
Binh Dan Hospital’s impact extends beyond treating international patients. The hospital actively participates in medical collaborations across the globe. Its surgeons have conducted live surgical demonstrations in India, shared urethral reconstruction techniques in Thailand and Malaysia, performed laparoscopic nephrectomies in Indonesia, and trained Filipino doctors in robotic colorectal cancer surgery. Medical professionals from the US and Australia have also visited the hospital for training in laparoscopic and urethral reconstruction techniques.
“As part of Ho Chi Minh City’s goal to become a regional medical hub, Binh Dan Hospital is committed to developing top-tier medical personnel, using state-of-the-art techniques, and fostering international cooperation,” said Dr. Tran Vinh Hung, the hospital’s director.
