Hair loss in women is often seen as just a cosmetic problem. But it can sometimes signal hormonal issues that also affect fertility. Many women worry when they find hair strands on their pillow in the morning. This sight can cause stress and lower self-confidence.
Dr. Rashmi Niphadkar, a fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility in Pune, explained in an interview with HT Lifestyle that hair loss can be more than just an appearance concern. “In many cases, hair loss is a sign of hormonal imbalance, which can also impact fertility,” she said. “Women should consult a doctor about hair loss without delay.”
How Hormones Affect Hair and Fertility
Dr. Niphadkar said hormones play a key role in hair health and reproductive function. Imbalances in hormones like androgens, estrogen, thyroid hormones, or prolactin can disrupt the hair growth cycle and harm fertility.
Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) often face these problems. PCOS causes irregular periods, weight gain, and increased androgen levels. This can lead to thinning hair or male-pattern baldness. PCOS is also a major cause of infertility and needs timely treatment.
Thyroid problems are another factor. Both hypothyroidism (low thyroid activity) and hyperthyroidism (high thyroid activity) can cause hair thinning, fatigue, and irregular periods. High prolactin levels, which affect milk production, can also interfere with ovulation and cause hair loss.
Besides hormones, nutritional deficiencies, stress, sudden weight changes, and some medications can disturb hormonal balance. This can lead to hair loss and affect fertility.
Diagnosing the Problem
Dr. Niphadkar advises getting blood tests, hormonal tests, and ultrasounds to find the root cause of hair loss and fertility issues. “It is important to follow medical advice and avoid self-medicating or using unproven products,” she warned.
3 Vital Tips to Improve Hair Health and Fertility
−Eat a Balanced Diet: Include vitamins and minerals that support hormone balance and healthy hair growth.
−Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can cause hormonal fluctuations that harm hair and fertility.
−Manage Stress: Practice yoga and meditation to reduce stress, which can improve hormone balance and protect fertility.
Dr. Niphadkar stressed that ignoring hair loss is risky. “Hair loss can signal hormonal problems that affect fertility. Timely action can improve both hair health and fertility chances,” she said.
Women should treat their hair, hormones, and fertility with care and consult experts when problems arise.
