Olivia Munn recently shared the intimate details of her surrogacy journey, which led to the birth of her daughter, Méi. The actress reflected on her struggles with breast cancer, infertility, and her unique experience with motherhood. Munn opened up about the fears, challenges, and joys she encountered along the way.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Munn, who is also a mother to a 3-year-old son, discussed how her surrogacy experience felt different from what she had expected. “I was like, ‘Oh wait, is this what it’s like to be an expectant dad?’” she said. She explained how she felt a deep connection to her unborn daughter, even though she wasn’t carrying her physically. “It was a little bit of, ‘Oh wait, she’s coming,’” Munn shared. “I felt like an expectant father.”
Munn’s path to motherhood was complicated by her battle with breast cancer. After undergoing extensive treatment, she had to have her uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries removed. She then pursued a specialized IVF protocol for cancer patients, which resulted in two female embryos. Despite the challenges, Munn was determined to have children and sought the full support of her husband, comedian John Mulaney. “I really don’t think that I’ll be okay unless we get two girl embryos,” she said, recalling how Mulaney offered his unwavering support: “Whatever you need.”
The actor expressed her gratitude for the surrogate who helped bring Méi into the world, saying, “We were so lucky to find someone so kind who we bonded with so much.” However, Munn had initial concerns about whether her daughter would recognize her. Those worries disappeared when Méi was born. “Méi would cry, and I was the only one who could get her to stop,” Munn said, emphasizing the profound bond she now shares with her daughter.
