Sexual and Reproductive Awareness Month: The Hidden Infection That Could Harm Women’s Fertility

Prevent Infertility

As we mark Sexual and Reproductive Awareness Month, it’s crucial to spotlight the often-overlooked health threat that can silently impact women’s fertility: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). This serious infection affects key reproductive organs such as the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, and it can have severe consequences if left untreated.

Understanding PID and Its Risks

Dr. Sucheta Parte, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Pune, emphasizes that PID is commonly caused by untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia and gonorrhea. Unsafe sexual practices and poor hygiene significantly increase the risk of PID, which can lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and ectopic pregnancies. However, PID can often go unnoticed in its early stages, as it may not show obvious symptoms until it becomes more severe.

Warning Signs to Watch Out For

PID can develop without showing immediate symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose without vigilance. Dr. Parte advises women to watch for key signs such as:

  • Pain during intercourse
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Fever

If left untreated, PID can cause permanent damage to the reproductive system, making early diagnosis and intervention crucial for maintaining fertility and overall health.

How Unsafe Sex and Poor Hygiene Contribute to PID

Unsafe sexual practices and inadequate hygiene can significantly raise the risk of developing PID:

  • Unprotected Sex and STIs: Having unprotected sex with an infected partner increases the risk of contracting STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea, which can lead to PID. Practicing safe sex with condoms and regularly testing for STIs can reduce the chances of infection.

  • Multiple Sexual Partners: Having multiple sexual partners increases the likelihood of STI exposure, which can lead to PID if not addressed promptly.

  • Poor Hygiene: Poor hygiene can allow harmful bacteria to enter the genital area, potentially spreading to the reproductive organs and causing PID. It’s important to maintain good hygiene, particularly before and after intercourse, to prevent infections.

  • Delayed Medical Attention: If you experience any unusual symptoms like pelvic pain or abnormal discharge, seeking medical help promptly is crucial. Ignoring these signs can allow PID to progress, causing more severe complications.

Taking Charge of Your Health

PID is a serious condition, but it can be prevented and treated with proper care and attention. To protect your reproductive health, it’s important to practice safe sex, maintain good hygiene, and seek medical advice if you experience any symptoms. Early intervention can prevent long-term fertility issues and other complications.
