SEBERANG PRAI — The government has announced a shift in its approach to address the country’s declining fertility rate. For the first time, greater emphasis will be placed on men’s role in boosting fertility, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
Speaking in Seberang Prai, Nancy noted that the national fertility rate had increased marginally from 1.6 to 1.7 children per woman over the past year. Despite this slight improvement, the rate remains below the replacement level and is considered low.
She explained that many existing government programmes have traditionally focused on women’s health and fertility. However, she stressed that it is now crucial to recognize the significant contribution men make to fertility and family planning.
“Men are often overlooked in these discussions,” Nancy said. “It is important to include them because they are part of the equation.”
The minister indicated that future policies and campaigns will take a more inclusive approach, targeting both men and women to encourage shared responsibility in family growth and reproductive health.
This move aligns with global trends acknowledging that addressing fertility challenges requires active participation from both genders.
