Erin Andrews revealed on her podcast Thursday that her surrogate had a miscarriage with her second child. The sportscaster said the loss made her “feel like a failure.”
“We got some really bad news today — our surrogate miscarried,” Andrews said, her voice breaking, during an episode of Calm Down with Erin and Charissa.
The 47-year-old NFL sideline reporter had previously lost twins through surrogacy before successfully having her son. Despite this, she was hopeful about the recent pregnancy.
“The baby’s heartbeat and other numbers looked really good. I even shared the good news with you all a few weeks ago,” Andrews explained.
Andrews thanked producer Ryan Musick, who co-hosted the episode while fellow sportscaster Charissa Thompson was away.
“I’ve been trying to stay focused, but I’ve just been tearing up the whole time,” she admitted.
Andrews is mother to 2-year-old Mack with her husband Jarret Stoll. She said she wasn’t sure about doing the episode but found the podcast a safe space to share her struggles, including her battle with cervical cancer and infertility.
She shared how she often bottles up her feelings at work and knows she will need time to process this loss. In the past, she didn’t allow herself to grieve fully and “suffered with it.”
The Taylor Swift song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” came to mind during the conversation. Andrews said she’s “really good at doing this with a broken heart.”
Musick offered to reschedule the podcast if Andrews wasn’t feeling up to it, but she promised to be open about her infertility and surrogacy journey.
“This really, really hurts, but so many people are going through this. If you feel alone or like a failure, I do too,” Andrews said. “But you’re not the only one.”
Andrews said her husband Jarret Stoll is also struggling with the loss. After the episode, she planned to spend time with him and their son, playing in the pool.
“I think hugs from him will feel a little different today,” she said.
