A Journey to Motherhood: How Kia Glover Became a Mom at 50 Through Embryo Adoption

Chickenpox and Infertility: What is the Link?

Motherhood is a deeply personal journey that varies from woman to woman. For some, the path is straightforward and quick, while for others, it is filled with hurdles that take years to overcome. Kia Glover’s story is one of resilience, hope, and determination, defying conventional expectations and offering a message of empowerment.

In an interview with The US Sun, Glover shared that becoming a mother was always a dream for her. However, as she approached her 40s, she began to fear that her chance of having a child might slip away. “By 39, I had been in several serious relationships, but I was still single, and my confidence was waning,” she said. At 40, she took the step of freezing her eggs, only to be faced with the heartbreaking reality of a diminished ovarian reserve.

Though she continued her search for a partner, the years passed without fulfilling her dream of becoming a mother. At 45, she made the decision to explore adoption as a single parent. Initially, she matched with a 16-year-old girl willing to place her baby up for adoption, but the birth mother ultimately changed her mind.

The onset of the pandemic brought new challenges, but also a fresh opportunity for Glover. In late 2022, she came across an article about embryo donation — a process where couples donate unused embryos from IVF treatments. Intrigued, Glover pursued this route and, in 2023, adopted two male embryos. Despite the potential judgment she feared from others, she felt confident in her decision. “I didn’t think trying for a baby at 49 was selfish,” she explained. “I was healthy, energetic, and had a strong support system. I was more financially secure and able to plan for my child’s future.”

The moment of confirmation came just nine days after the embryo transfer. Glover took a pregnancy test and was overjoyed to learn she was expecting. In November 2023, at the age of 50, she gave birth to her son, Samuel, at 37 weeks.

Reflecting on the emotional experience of holding Samuel for the first time, Glover said, “He was tiny, weighing just 5lb 11oz, but I was overwhelmed with love. It was a whirlwind, but I didn’t miss my old life. Being with Samuel was all I needed.”

While some may raise an eyebrow at her age, Glover is unfazed by the occasional surprise or confusion from others who might mistake her for Samuel’s grandmother. “I plan to tell Samuel about his conception when he’s older, but for now, I’m savoring every moment of being his mom,” she shared.

Looking ahead, Glover acknowledges the possibility of missing milestones in her son’s life due to her age, but her journey over the past decade has revealed an inner strength she never knew she had. Her story is a testament to the idea that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams, especially when the desire to be a mother is strong.

Kia Glover’s journey to motherhood is a remarkable example of perseverance, hope, and the power of making one’s own path.
