The Israeli Ministry of Health has released a report detailing significant irregularities within the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) unit at Assuta Hospital in 2023. The report highlights two major incidents that raised concerns about the professionalism, organization, and safety standards of the facility’s IVF practices.
The first incident, reported in May 2023, involved a genetic mismatch between a child born via IVF at Assuta Ramat Hachayal and the father, sparking fears that the embryo had been fertilized by sperm from an unrelated donor. DNA tests on the couple’s two children, conducted by accredited international laboratories, confirmed that neither child was genetically linked to the father. The IVF procedure had been carried out without the couple’s consent or knowledge, violating fundamental ethical guidelines.
The second issue, reported in February 2023, involved cases of egg atresia due to dehydration. This problem resurfaced in May, leading to two women needing to repeat the IVF process. Egg atresia, a condition where eggs fail to mature properly, is a known risk factor in IVF procedures, but in these cases, the underlying cause was linked to dehydration, which raised questions about the clinic’s procedural and operational oversight.
In response to these incidents, the Public Complaints Commissioner for Medical Professions established a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the IVF failures, focusing on the professionalism, transparency, and overall management of the IVF unit. The committee’s findings indicated that the hospital’s response to the genetic mismatch was slow, uncoordinated, and lacking in sensitivity. Additionally, the committee criticized the failure to report unusual occurrences in a timely and thorough manner, which impeded the ability to conduct a proper investigation.
The investigation also uncovered internal reports highlighting work-related pressures, such as staffing shortages and workload demands, which were not disclosed to the Ministry of Health or the committee. This lack of transparency raised further concerns about the hospital’s commitment to safety protocols and patient care.
The committee’s findings pointed to systemic failures in professional and management oversight, urging a more stringent focus on adhering to established protocols and enhancing the training and supervision of embryologists and clinical staff involved in IVF procedures.
In response to the findings, Assuta Hospital acknowledged the seriousness of the issues raised and expressed its commitment to addressing the flaws identified in the report. The hospital emphasized that the genetic mismatch incident was linked to a previous issue from 2018, and they have since taken steps to implement rigorous internal checks, bolster staff professionalism, and upgrade technological systems to improve patient safety.
Assuta also stated that lessons learned from the egg dehydration incidents have been applied extensively to avoid recurrence. The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high clinical standards and upholding patient trust, adding that their goal remains to fulfill the dreams of couples seeking to build families through IVF while ensuring the highest standards of care.
The report underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability within IVF clinics, particularly regarding sensitive procedures that directly impact the health and well-being of families. The Ministry of Health has called for further regulatory oversight to ensure the highest standards of medical practice are consistently upheld across the IVF network.
