Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. Characterized by irregular periods, ovarian cysts, and high levels of androgens, PCOS can significantly impact fertility, menstrual cycles, and overall health. Symptoms such as acne, excessive hair growth, and infertility are often associated with the condition.
According to nutritionist Anjali Mukerjee, the rising prevalence of PCOS can be attributed to socioeconomic changes and lifestyle factors. In her recent Instagram post, Mukerjee highlights how modern women, who are balancing multiple roles, are also facing increased stress. This added stress contributes to the development of PCOS by subtly elevating cortisol and testosterone levels in the body.
“PCOS isn’t just hormonal—it’s also influenced by lifestyle and stress,” Mukerjee explains.
As women juggle work, family, social obligations, and personal goals, the constant pressure can lead to elevated stress levels. Mukerjee notes that stress causes the body to release cortisol, a hormone that plays a key role in the “fight or flight” response. High cortisol levels, in turn, can trigger an increase in androgens, such as testosterone.
The nutritionist further emphasizes that PCOS revolves around two main factors: insulin resistance and high androgen levels. Insulin resistance occurs when the body becomes less responsive to insulin, resulting in higher blood sugar levels. Elevated androgen levels can worsen insulin resistance, creating a cycle that intensifies PCOS symptoms.
In her post, Mukerjee stresses that managing stress is crucial to controlling PCOS symptoms. She advocates for an integrated approach to health, including homeopathy, nutrition, and emotional wellness.
“Progress shouldn’t come at the cost of your health,” she concludes.
Previously, Mukerjee also shared insights on managing weight loss for women with PCOS, acknowledging the difficulty of weight management due to hormonal imbalances.
