Hyderabad — Medical experts in Hyderabad are raising concerns about a rising trend: more couples are being pushed into In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment too early, often without exploring basic infertility care first.
Specialists say that many couples are skipping essential steps like lifestyle changes, counseling, and preliminary health assessments. They emphasize that IVF should be a last resort—not the starting point. Currently, IVF success rates hover around 45%, and doctors caution against relying on it prematurely.
A Troubling Trend
With fertility clinics increasing across Hyderabad, some couples report being referred to IVF directly by gynecologists, without being offered simpler or less invasive options. A recent social media post by a local couple brought attention to the issue. The couple claimed they were advised to start IVF without a full discussion of other choices. Their post sparked debate on whether commercial pressures are influencing such decisions.
When Should Couples Consider IVF?
According to Dr. P. Dakshayani, a senior gynecologist and medical superintendent at the Urban Community Health Centre in Amberpet, couples should try to conceive naturally for at least two years before considering IVF. “Most couples will conceive within this time if they avoid contraceptives and monitor their lifestyle,” she explains.
Even after two years of trying, IVF might not be necessary. Dr. Dakshayani believes many couples can still conceive with basic changes such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, working daytime shifts, and managing stress. “IVF is not the first line of treatment. A complete evaluation of both partners is essential before going that route,” she says.
The Role of Proper Counseling
Senior pediatrician and former Niloufer Hospital superintendent, Dr. T. Usha Rani, agrees. She stresses that proper counseling must come before any IVF decision. “IVF is not something to begin blindly. The couple’s history, health, and mental readiness must be understood first,” she says.
Dr. Rani also points out the growing number of IVF centers in Hyderabad, which has created more competition. However, she warns doctors not to give in to financial motives. “Gynecologists should always explore natural and medical alternatives before recommending IVF. Likewise, couples should consult a qualified doctor first, not go straight to an IVF clinic,” she adds.
Bottom Line
Experts say that IVF can be a valuable tool, but it’s often used too early. Couples are encouraged to seek proper medical advice, adopt healthier lifestyles, and undergo basic fertility evaluations before turning to IVF. Clear communication between doctors and patients remains critical to avoiding unnecessary procedures and emotional distress.
