AITA for not being “overjoyed” at my friend’s pregnancy announcement after struggling with infertility?

how do i increase my chances of getting pregnant

Infertility can be one of the most emotionally taxing experiences a person can go through, and while friends and family may mean well, their actions don’t always reflect the sensitivity required. A Reddit user, u/ClassicImportance987, recently shared her emotional experience on the AITA subreddit, where her close friend blindsided her with a pregnancy announcement, which was recorded for social media.

The context: a dinner gone wrong

The original poster (OP) has suffered two miscarriages, with her most recent one occurring in January. Since then, she has been undergoing fertility treatments, still processing the grief of her losses. She was beginning to heal when she went to dinner with two long-time friends, one of whom had known about her fertility struggles.

The moment took an unexpected turn when OP’s friend excitedly blurted out, “I’m pregnant!!!” while holding up her phone to record the reaction. OP, completely taken aback, felt “absolutely sick.” She quickly managed a forced response: “Oh wow, I had a feeling,” as she struggled to contain her emotions. Friend B, aware of OP’s fertility journey, tried to steer the conversation away from the announcement. However, OP felt emotionally overwhelmed and, even worse, the friend who made the announcement texted Friend B afterward, justifying her actions by saying, “I hope L (OP) understands. I was nervous to tell her but I didn’t want to wait until another time.”

Friend B, expressing concern over the recording, was met with defensiveness from the pregnant friend, who said, “L shouldn’t be upset with me. It’s a special moment for me and true friends are happy for you regardless.” Since then, OP hasn’t heard from her friend.

Reactions from Reddit

The comment section was overwhelmingly supportive of OP. Many users, particularly those who had dealt with infertility and loss, expressed outrage at the insensitivity displayed by the friend.

One commenter, Hillosaurusrex, wrote, “As a person who has had 4 miscarriages and lost friends over this exact reason, I am SCREAMING at my phone that you are NOT THE ASSHOLE!! If you Google search ‘how to tell my friend who is going through infertility that I am pregnant,’ the first thing that pops up is to tell them via text so that they can process it.”

Another commenter, ArticQimmiq, shared their own experience of receiving a pregnancy announcement via text, which they appreciated for giving them the space to process their emotions without added pressure.

However, some users, like silverphoenix2025, tried to understand both perspectives. They agreed that recording the reaction was inappropriate, especially considering the sensitive nature of OP’s infertility journey. At the same time, they acknowledged that feeling happy for a friend’s pregnancy is complicated when dealing with infertility.

So, was OP the ahole? Absolutely not.

The reality of infertility grief is that it’s not just about the loss of a potential child; it’s also the deep emotional toll that comes with seeing others move forward while still grappling with your own journey. OP’s reaction wasn’t an attempt to take away her friend’s joy, but rather a natural, human response to an overwhelming and deeply personal situation.

Pregnancy announcements, especially to those struggling with infertility, require a level of empathy. The approach of recording the moment—especially when OP wasn’t given the opportunity to process her emotions privately—was an unfortunate oversight by the pregnant friend. Many commenters pointed out that it’s widely advised to inform friends going through infertility via text, allowing them the space to respond when they’re ready.

In the comments, OP confirmed she was indeed happy for her friend, stating, “Definitely happy for her! I think my reaction would’ve been happier had I not been recorded tbh.”

Conclusion

This situation highlights the importance of being sensitive and understanding when dealing with friends who are struggling with infertility. It’s not about taking away the joy of a pregnancy announcement; it’s about recognizing that some moments need to be shared with compassion and respect.
