MADURAI — The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has called on the state government to consider setting up an infertility treatment centre at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai, emphasizing the need for the facility to be established promptly for the benefit of the public.
A bench consisting of Justices SM Subramaniam and AD Maria Clete made this suggestion during the disposal of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by A Veronica Mary. The petitioner’s counsel informed the court that the government had previously responded to a similar petition last year. The government had informed the court that a proposal to establish the facility, with an estimated cost of Rs 1.38 crore, was already submitted. Despite this, no decision had been made regarding the proposal.
While acknowledging that the matter was a policy decision for the government, the judges stressed that the court could not impose its opinion. However, they pointed out that there is growing demand from the public, particularly from disadvantaged communities, for such a service. The court suggested that any welfare-oriented government should address this demand in an effective and timely manner.
The judges urged the government to consider the proposal and expedite the process of establishing the infertility treatment centre at GRH.
