Does Premature Ejaculation Impact Fertility?
Dr. Pallavi Prasad, a fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility in Bengaluru, explained that while premature ejaculation can affect certain aspects of sexual health, it does not directly cause infertility. Male fertility mainly depends on the quality, quantity, and delivery of sperm, which are not impacted by premature ejaculation. The issue only affects the timing of ejaculation, not the sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg.
Even men with premature ejaculation release normal semen containing sperm, which can still fertilize an egg. However, for conception to occur, ejaculation must happen inside the vagina to allow sperm to reach the egg. If premature ejaculation happens before vaginal penetration, it can make conception more difficult. This is more of a mechanical barrier than a biological fertility issue.
Psychological factors like stress, anxiety, and depression can also contribute to both premature ejaculation and fertility problems, complicating the relationship between sexual function and reproductive health.
Treating Premature Ejaculation
Currently, there is no surgical solution for premature ejaculation. Dr. Prasad mentioned that penile implants were once experimented with but often led to negative health effects. Instead, men dealing with premature ejaculation should explore treatments such as behavioral techniques, counseling, and medication. Sexual health concerns are common and treatable, and most couples can achieve their intimacy and family planning goals with proper support.
In summary, while premature ejaculation can make conception more challenging, it does not directly affect male fertility. With the right treatment and support, many couples can still achieve their baby plans.
