Researchers worldwide are working on non-antibiotic methods to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) as antibiotic resistance becomes an increasing concern. This painful condition affects millions globally, with approximately 40% of women in the United States experiencing a UTI at some point in their lives, along with many men.
A recent article in Nature, published on May 2, 2024, highlighted the latest vaccine developments, including an oral spray designed to help prevent UTIs. One such vaccine, Immunotek S.L. Uromune™ (MV140), targets recurrent UTIs and has already been approved in several countries.
A long-term observational study, conducted at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, England, examined the clinical benefits of MV140. The study was presented at the European Association of Urology Congress on April 6, 2024, and revealed promising results, though it was not peer-reviewed.
The trial involved 72 women and 17 men, with 54% of participants remaining UTI-free nine years after receiving two doses of the vaccine. Other participants experienced fewer and less severe UTIs. While some individuals required antibiotics for breakthrough infections, most reported no severe side effects during the nine-year period.
Additionally, a secondary analysis of a phase 3 clinical trial, published in March 2024, showed significant improvement in patients who received MV140 for three months. Those vaccinated experienced a dramatic reduction in UTIs, with a median of just 0.0 UTIs per year, compared to 3.0 UTIs per year in the placebo group (p < 0.0001).
These findings suggest that MV140 may offer a valuable non-antibiotic option to reduce or prevent recurrent UTIs, providing relief for women suffering from this condition and enabling them to live fuller lives.
As of May 23, 2024, Uromune MV140 is not available in the U.S. or Canada but is approved in Mexico and Spain. It is also available in approximately 20 countries through special access programs.
