An international congress dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in infertility treatment is scheduled for December. The event will focus on the latest developments and technologies in AI that are transforming the diagnosis and management of infertility.

Key topics for discussion include AI-driven predictive models for treatment success, machine learning techniques for embryo selection, and ethical considerations surrounding reproductive technologies. The integration of AI into medical fields has substantially enhanced diagnostic accuracy, predictive capabilities, and treatment efficacy.

In the realm of infertility treatment, AI is poised to significantly improve treatment outcomes, diagnostic precision, and overall success rates for couples facing fertility challenges.

Expanded Infertility Treatment Services

Salamat Health Insurance Organization has expanded its coverage for infertility treatments, now offering a broader range of services. The organization has increased the number of covered medications to 66 and medical equipment items to 29, up from 63 and 28, respectively. Additionally, it now includes seven types of medical imaging services, such as diagnostic ultrasounds and ovarian reserve testing for insured couples.

The organization has also introduced 16 genetic testing services for women with recurrent miscarriages and 45 fertility preparation services. Insured individuals can access a wide array of outpatient services, including medications, diagnostic tests, imaging services, physician consultations, and inpatient care.

Government-funded centers cover 90% of treatment costs at subsidized rates, while private centers cover the same percentage at free rates. Currently, approximately 63,000 infertile couples are registered with the health insurance system, with expectations for this number to rise as more couples seek these services.

According to Mohammad-Esmaeil Kameli, an official with the Organization, the expanded services include medical equipment, drugs for specific conditions, laboratory services, surgical treatments, subspecialty care, and medical imaging. Salamat Health Insurance covers nearly 45 million people nationwide, with 12 million receiving free coverage. In 2022, the organization allocated approximately $10 million towards infertility treatments and population growth initiatives in the first half of the year.

New Legislative and Policy Developments

The Iranian government has introduced the “Law on Family and Youth Support,” recently enacted to address declining birth rates and promote family support. This seven-year plan, approved by the Majlis (Iranian Parliament) and the Guardian Council, provides health insurance for infertile couples, support for working women, nutritional assistance for mothers and children, educational opportunities for student mothers, financial aid for families, and ongoing medical care for pregnant women.

Inauguration of the National AI Center

On July 10, Iran inaugurated its National Artificial Intelligence Center, with a ceremony attended by then Acting President Mohammad Mokhber. The center aims to create a robust AI market, drive economic progress through AI, and elevate Iran’s position in the global AI landscape. A significant investment of 50 trillion rials (approximately $100 million) will be allocated by both public and private sectors to develop AI infrastructure in the upcoming fiscal year, beginning March 21.

Rouhollah Dehqani-Firouzabadi, Vice President for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-based Economy, highlighted that while Iran ranks 17th globally in AI scientific production and publications, it stands 78th in AI application. The national steering committee’s primary goal is to advance AI development through collaboration between the private and public sectors.
