The IVF Process

The first step in IVF is ovarian stimulation. This involves administering hormone medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Normally, a woman’s ovaries release one egg per cycle, but IVF requires several eggs to increase the likelihood of successful fertilization.

Hormone Medications

Doctors prescribe medications such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) to stimulate the ovaries. These medications encourage the development of multiple follicles, each containing an egg. Monitoring through ultrasound and blood tests helps track the development of these follicles.

Sperm can be collected from a partner or a donor. In cases of male infertility, sperm may be directly injected into the eggs using a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This approach helps overcome issues like low sperm count or poor sperm motility.

In traditional IVF, sperm and eggs are placed together in a petri dish and allowed to fertilize naturally. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. Both methods aim to create embryos, which are then monitored for development.

Embryo Culture

After fertilization, the resulting embryos are cultured in a controlled environment for several days. This allows the embryos to develop and grow before being transferred to the uterus.

Embryos are typically cultured for 3 to 5 days. During this time, they progress from a single cell to a blastocyst stage, which is more likely to implant successfully in the uterus.

Embryo Selection

Embryos are assessed for quality based on their development and appearance. The best-quality embryos are selected for transfer. Genetic testing may be offered to screen for potential abnormalities before transfer.

Embryo Transfer

The final step in the IVF process is the embryo transfer. This involves placing one or more embryos into the uterus with the goal of achieving pregnancy.

The embryo transfer is a relatively simple procedure performed without anesthesia. A thin catheter is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus, where the embryos are gently deposited. The procedure typically takes just a few minutes.
